Ofsted

The Berkeley Nursery Previously known as:

The Berkeley Willows is registered with and inspected by Ofsted as required by the Children Act 1989 (ref no EY340293)

Ofsted  launched far-reaching changes to the way it inspects early years provision, schools in September 2015 which included the introduction of a common inspection framework for all early years settings on the Early Years Register. The judgement on outcomes for children is new for early years providers. Inspectors  focus on children’s progress from their different starting points. Alongside the continuing focus on teaching (reported under the new teaching, learning and assessment judgement), this emphasis on progress will ensure that inspectors check that children are given the best possible start to their learning and development. All early years provision, including in schools, will now be judged against the same evaluation criteria and reported on using the same language in the same way. This means that parents will find it easier to make comparisons between different providers.

Ofsted inspects on the following judgements:

  • Effectiveness of leadership and management
  • Quality of teaching, learning and assessment
  • Personal Development, behaviour and welfare
  • Outcomes for children

Extracts from our March 2016 inspection

  • The quality of teaching is good and some elements are outstanding. Staff use very effective observation, assessment and planning systems to help each child achieve their next steps in learning.

  • Children are encouraged to try doing things for themselves and they respond confidently and enthusiastically to challenges. This contributes towards them developing good levels of self confidence in their own abilities.

  • Staff are good role models and have high expectations for all children that they care for. Children behave extremely well for their ages and develop positive relationships with staff. They demonstrate good manners and a respect for each other.

  • Partnerships with parents are effective. Parents speak highly of the staff, activities on offer and how well their children are settled. They are kept well informed about their child's care, learning and development and they contribute towards assessments.

  • The managers provide strong leadership which has led to considerable improvements over a short space of time since the last inspection. There is a clear vision and drive for high-quality provision which is shared by the dedicated staff team.
