The Berkeley Academy Governing Body

School governors play a vital role in supporting and shaping the direction of our school.  As volunteers, we work alongside the leadership team to drive continuous improvement, focussing on three core functions: setting the strategic vision, ensuring financial accountability, and acting as a critical friend to the headteacher.

At The Berkeley Academy, we are fortunate to have a committed and skilled governing board whose members bring a wide range of professional expertise. Our role is to both support and challenge the headteacher and senior leaders, ensuring that the school's vision and values are not only well-defined but lived out every day. We work to ensure that every aspect of school life is the very best it can be for our children and families.

How we work

The Local Governing Board meets formally twice each term, with each meeting focussed on key priorities. Governors also spend time in school throughout the year, working closely with staff and monitoring developments. We have link governors for areas such as safeguarding, SEND, health and safety and standards, who report their findings to the full board to ensure strong oversight and accountability.

Our work is closely aligned with the School Development Plan, and we monitor progress to ensure that planned improvements have real impact - whether raising standards, enhancing provision, or improving the school environment. We also approve the school budget and ensure that resources are used effectively and efficiently so the school remains well-resourced and forward-looking.

Our commitment

All governors give their time freely and are united by a shared passion for the education and welfare of our children. Being part of The Berkeley School community is a privilege, and it inspires us to STRIVE to ensure that every child can grow, explore, and reach their full potential, with all talents recognised and valued.

External recognition

Ofsted has recognised the strength of governance at The Berkeley:

"Members of the board of trustees and of the governing body are forensic in their analysis of information. They are resolute in their efforts to ensure that pupils in the school are helped to flourish, both academically and socially...Staff said that they feel valued for the role that they play and are proud to be part of the school." - Ofsted 2015
