Jack Powell

Term of office  10.01.2022 - 09.01.2026

Co-opted Governor

Seven years ago, I joined St Thomas More Catholic High as an ICT technician with the added responsibility of supporting GCSE pupils in computer science lessons. This classroom experience sparked my interest in teaching and I proceeded to find a route which would allow me to achieve the role I aspired to. Upon realising the qualifications required to teach in an secondary school, I undertook a distance learning degree which would allow me to progress to the next stage of teacher training. While carrying out the degree, I continued to advance my career at the school, progressing into assisting additional computer science lessons in KS3 and KS4. Further to this, I successfully applied for the role of cover supervisor which provided me with greater responsibility and the ability to take the lesson unsupervised. My greatest achievement was the allocation of a part time teaching contract in which I taught computing to KS3 pupils. Following this valuable experience I undertook a PGCE within Computer Science at Keele University and was fortunate to find my full time position back at St Thomas More.

Since my tenure began in June I have pushed my love of Computing and STEM through the school, including the introduction of many additional clubs and activities to enthuse our pupils within this area. Further training and CPD has helped me progress and also provided bursaries for additional STEM equipment to support the curriculum in our school. This has led to an renewed interest in STEM activities which I aim to further as my career progresses.

Alongside my work in a school I enjoy spending time with my family where you can often find me watching Disney + with my 2 year old daughter. I also enjoy being outdoors and often spend time on the family farm where possible, although this could be considered completely opposite to my day job, I enjoy seeing how technology can affect every aspect of life and hope to share my skills and experiences with the Berkeley Academy
