Reading in Year 2

During the Autumn term, your child will bring home a book from the Little Wandle scheme.  This book will be from whichever level your child is currently reading at. Your child will read this book 3 times per week with an adult in school before bringing it home to read too. 

Your child may also bring home a Reading for Pleasure book. This book is chosen independently by your child and is not based on their reading level. It is simply for you to enjoy reading together at home. These books are intended to foster a love of reading and can be changed by your child as often as needed — we are encouraging independence with this process.

• Little Wandle books will be changed weekly.

• Reading for Pleasure books can be changed independently by your child whenever they are ready for a new one.
   

After half term, many children will be moving on to reading Little Wandle Fluency books.  These books are more substantial than the previous Little Wandle books that they have read and are designed to promote a child's reading fluency.  Reading fluently means reading at a similar speed to the speed which we would talk to people, not relying on sounding out words (although they may need to still sound out longer, unfamiliar words) and varying the tone of our voice depending on what is happening in the story or who is speaking.  These books contain 6 chapters which will all be read within school and with an adult before being sent home to enjoy.  As these books are more substantial, they will be read over a 2 week period so your child will be given a new book every fortnight instead of every week.

Please remember to record any reading at home on your child's Pageticker account.
