Welcome to Year 2. Here you will find lots of useful information, helpful links and the homework that has been set for Classes 5 and 6.  To find out more about what Year 2 is like please see the Termly Overview and the 'Meet the Teacher' link below:

Homework

On Friday, homework will be set and then handed back in by the following Friday so that it can be marked and feedback given. Each week there may be a range of tasks set including math tasks, reading comprehension, spellings to learn, opportunities to write and topic work.  It is also important that reading takes place each week and that you access the Accelerated Reader quizzes once you have been set up on this (if you haven't received your login yet, just continue doing fantastic reading at home as normal). 

Please remember to access the many online resources available to enhance your learning too. These include:   Times Tables Rock Stars and  Spelling Shed.

PE Information

You will need to wear your full school uniform everyday apart from THURSDAY and FRIDAY. On these days, you can wear your P.E. kit for the whole day as this is when you will do your P.E. lesson.

Please ensure that you have a hat, suncream and a water bottle for the hot days and rain jacket for the not so sunny days, as you will still be outside!

For P.E, you will need to wear your house colour t-shirt, joggers or shorts, and suitable trainers. Remember to also tie your hair up if it is long and remove all jewellery.  

Writing

In writing this term we will be using the following books to support the children in their learning:

We will begin our writing journey by recapping and refining what makes an accurate sentence.  We will be practising our basic writing skills such as capital letters, full stops, handwriting and ensuring our sentences make sense before we build upon these skills and begin adding more detail and description to our writing.

Reading 

At The Berkeley Academy we believe that the teaching of reading is integral to a child’s understanding and appreciation of the world around them: a platform that allows our children to see beyond what they know, share in cultural experience and develop the vocabulary they need to effectively express themselves. 

Reading is at the very heart of our curriculum. We are committed to promoting a love for reading and not only giving children opportunities to read in English lessons, but in the wider curriculum too.  This term we will be using either our Little Wandle reading books or banded Accelerated Reader books to support our learning whilst also enjoying a free choice book which we can share with our family.

Maths

We use the White Rose Maths scheme as the basis for our Maths curriculum.

To support parents with Maths at home, White Rose have produced lots of resources, which you can find on their website (Click here for White Rose Maths Parent resources) under "Parents & Pupils".

This section includes support on several areas of maths including videos under the 'Maths with Michael' section. Click here for 'Maths with Michael'. The videos also have free, downloadable easy to follow, step by step guides with copies of resources that we use in school. Please check them out!

This year, The Berkeley has invested in Sumdog for our pupils to use at school and at home.  Sumdog offers maths practice for children aged 5-14 years old with a range of exciting games catering to all types of learners.  At The Berkeley we will be Using Sumdog regularly as part of our approach to teaching maths which will help in raising maths attainment.

The findings of a recent independent impact study revealed that the progress made by regular Sumdog users (30 minutes or more a week) was almost double that of non-regular users giving them a 6-month advantage over their peers.

Mathsbot contains interactive coins, Dienes, hundred squares and number frames (that resemble Numicon) and many more.

No Outsiders

The No Outsider’s vision is for inclusive education, promoting community cohesion and preparing our children for life as global citizens. ‘No Outsiders’ aims to develop the ethos of the school into one where every member of the school community, as well as every visitor through our doors, feels welcome and able to be themselves without fear of discrimination.

As a school, we will be incorporating the No Outsiders lesson plans and book suggestions into our own PSHE lessons. Class teachers will deliver the programme throughout the year, using developmentally appropriate picture books. Through discussion and activities based upon the picture books, pupils will be encouraged to show respect and develop their understanding of diversity.
